Suddenly, the Senior Bowl feels like the Super Bowl. Message boards are buzzing, flashbulbs are popping and the game is sold out when you couldn’t give away ducats in recent years. And the reason for that?! One Timothy Richard Tebow is in the house.
Now, women and fans of all ages are coming over the barricade and geeking out for Tebow. Unfortunately, many of the NFL scouts and decision makers in attendance did not share their enthusiasm on day one.
And the tweets started flying as soon as he got under center and began fumbling the snaps! You can’t get the ball to your wide outs if you can’t get it from your center. I get that the guy hasn’t actually gotten under center since, well…ever. But this is not a small thing. Getting the ball cleanly from your center is step 1 of 10 in drop-back passing. And it’s the easiest.
Look, I know Tebow has every intangible in the book. Shoot, he wrote the book. But great leadership isn’t going to enable you to do something you’ve never done before. Namely run a conventional pro-style offense. Crazy competitiveness won’t help you sell a play-fake. An ability to lead won’t help you thread a deep ball. Corn-fed handsomeness and flat polygons might help you on that gratuitous catwalk the scouts subject these dudes to, but it won’t fix faulty mechanics or help you read defenses.
Look, intangibles are great. But you know what’s even better? Tangibles! Check out #9 and # 18 next Sunday and you’ll see a clinic in both.
Look, I want Tim Tebow on my team and in my locker room. I’m just not sure I want him starting as my quarterback. I know this! I don’t want to see that little jump pass on the goal line…unless he wants a helmet under the chin or worse.
