There’s bitter, grumpy old men…and then there’s Fran Tarkenton. The NFL legend made it pretty clear during the season how he felt about Brett Favre playing for his old team. There’s not a whole lot of gray area, or room for interpretation in calling it “despicable.” But maybe after seeing him have an MVP caliber season and go to war in the NFC title game against Saints, Francis might have changed his tune. “Eeehhhhh!!”
Tarkenton couldn’t wait for someone to ask him what he thought about Favre’s performance so could say that stupid pick he threw cost them the game: “(The Vikings) were the better team. Their offense turned the ball over five times, the Viking offense. But still if (Favre) didn’t make that stupid play at the end of the game they would have won the game.” I think Tarkenton was more pumped up by that pick than anyone on the Saints’ sideline was. But he was just getting started!
Favre has gone two decades without missing a single start so the one thing you absolutely cannot question is his toughness. But of course, Tarkenton did: “…we all get hit, but he is flapping around and jumping around and he is getting hit and he talks in that soft voice. I would rather it be about the team and not Brett Favre. I get the idea that it’s more about Brett Favre than the team. A quarterback is supposed to make his teammates better, but he is not about that.” He’s dramatizing his injuries?! And doesn’t make anyone around him better?! That’s incredible!!! And so wrong. It’s just a bad take. Go ask Visanthe Shiancoe if “Number 4” made him better! Ask Sidney Rice! Or Percy Harvin! Go ask the head coach, Brad Childress! Ask anyone in the organization not named Francis!
He’s dramatizing his injuries?! The cat’s 40 and getting the living hell beat out of him…Fran. Bob Feller thinks you’re cantankerous. Ted Williams thinks you need to dial it down. Stop piling on a guy who at 40 is better than you were in your prime. Bitter down, pops! Don’t you have an “early bird special” to get to and a crossword puzzle to finish? That’s incredible!
