I can’t sit here and say I knew South Carolina would upset top ranked Kentucky. But, I can say I’m not surprised. Not after seeing the Gamecocks get their hearts ripped out by Florida. And not when you knew U-K had a bulls-eye on their back in the way of that number one ranking. And would get South Carolina’s best shot! And especially after five-foot-nine, fifth year senior Devan Downey called his shot saying “he’d be the best point on the floor” and not phenom John Wall.
And last night, Downey was right. This kid is hard. And crazy tough! He didn’t make a ton of shots, but he made all the big ones. Tell me there’s not a bit of A.I. in this crossover breakdown, attack the rack, off-hand finish. Trust me, he’ll will his way onto an NBA roster next year.
As for Kentucky, you’re never happy about a loss. But I’m guessing John Calipari isn’t unhappy about this one. Now, at least he has their attention! Now, all his warnings and admonishments won’t go in one ear and out the other. Now, when he tells them to listen to him (and not everyone else telling them how great they are), they will! That’s a humbling loss for a team that probably needed it. And it takes the pressure off a young team that otherwise might have gone into the final stretch of the season unbeaten.
So in that sense, this loss is actually a positive. Which is a good thing. Since they’ll probably lose a couple more in the next few weeks as well!
