Although we touched on the braindeads getting after Kyle Williams via Twitter and Facebook yesterday I want to reset it now because Williams mentioned what it felt like to check his at mentions after the game: “It was kind of shocking. I kind of had been forewarned before I even got to the point where I could check it. I was forewarned by some of my family members and some of my friends that were there not to look at the Twitter and Facebook because it was going to be pretty bad.” And it was. Like, quote, “I hope you, your wife, kids and family die”….bad.
So it begs the questions: are fans that much more belligerent and hostile than they used to be. Or because of social networking, is it just a case of them now having direct access to the players. Of course, the answer is both: the more jacked up their lives become, the more hostile they get. And now, these Twitter terrorists have a way to get at players they’re angry with, quickly and directly.
Look, I understand there are some people out there have it bad: the economy is jacked: they’re beaten down. Their life didn’t turn out the way they had hoped. They’re miserable. And the only thing that gets them through their week: is their NFL team. And they live and die with it. But just because a guy doesn’t make a play and it contributes to a tough loss doesn’t mean you should tell him you hope he and his family die. You may think you wanted that game badly, but I guarantee you didn’t want any worse than the guy playing the game. As always, Twitter is both the best and worst thing I’ve ever seen. And right now, it doesn’t get much worse than this.
