And no, I’m not looking to pile on the Ol’ Gunslinger. And this isn’t a “I told you so moment.” All of us who cracked on him for his waffling and rapped the Vikings for bringing him in, were still wrong. He did the right thing in coming back and they did the right thing in bringing him back.
The fact that they came up just short doesn’t change that.
It wasn’t Super Bowl or bust. Because, neither Tarvaris Jackson nor Sage Rosenfels would have gotten them anywhere near sniffing the NFC title game. And Favre was a warrior yesterday, getting hammered, but continuing to battle and refusing to give in. He just happened to make one of the worst decisions of his career at the worst possible time. A decision that we all naively thought he was beyond. And will probably be haunted the rest of his life by it. Early indications are he has already decided to hang them up. But who knows. Who cares! It’s his legacy. He can do what he wants with it.
Look, the only thing tougher than imagining Brett Favre ending his brilliant career with one of his worst picks ever, is imagining him surviving the pounding he’d take physically of another season at age 41. But I’m officially out of the ‘Gunslinger’ prediction business. Enjoy your offseason, see you after OTA’s and training camp!
All of that said…again, Favre isn’t the reason they lost that game. There’s plenty of blame to go around. That 12 men in the huddle flag that put Favre in a position to self destruct was nearly as bad as the pick itself. That was amateur hour! They jacked up a basic personnel set substitution and they did it coming out of a timeout. That’s as inexcusable as the pick. You make that mistake in August, not January. And Brad Childress is going to have to wear that one.
Again, his not being able to count to 11 was as bad as Favre’s boomerang.
