It was all setting up for the ‘Ol Gunslinger wasn’t it? The legend was about to grow even bigger, if that was even possible. The ‘Ol Silver Fox, Brett Favre, getting the living snot beat out of him, out there on one leg, in the most hostile environment anywhere, leading his team to the Super Bowl to keep the dream and his revenge tour alive.
He was putting the finishing touches on one of the greatest stories ever. Run one more play, and give your kicker a chance to ice it. Or do what you did instead!! “Uh-oh!”
How do you go virtually the entire year without forcing anything or trying to squeeze it in there and then go brain-dead in that moment? That’s not “one of those things”. Or that’s “just football; that’ll happen”. Or even “you take the good with the bad with the ‘Ol Gunslinger”. A 19 year vet and a hall of famer, can’t make that decision in that situation!
How is it that the entire world knows you don’t throw across your body, over the middle, late, in one of the biggest games ever?! But the one guy who had to know, didn’t?! Tuck it in, put your head down, and give your kicker, one of the game’s best…a chance to win it.
I’m not saying the ‘Ol Gunslinger is the reason they lost that game. I’m just saying he picked a heck-u-va time to remember he was the ‘Ol Gunslinger. And if that is the end, that’s not exactly what they mean by “going out on your own terms”. Not exactly a John Elway ending to his career was it?!
Of course we all kept waiting for Favre to have one of those drive killing, there isn’t a throw I don’t think I can’t make moments. We just didn’t expect on the last play of his career.
