Coach Brad Childress had a moment on the sideline. The Vikings couldn’t get anything going offensively, couldn’t slow Julius Peppers down, and the ‘Ol Gunslinger was getting the snot beat out of him. So Brad Childress went to him on the sideline and told him reportedly…he’d be taking him out of the game. At which point Favre informed Childress that he would not be coming out of the game. And that was that!
I wonder if he told him if wanted to keep his job as head coach, he had one second to get out of his way and get Bryant McKinnie some help before he got both himself and Favre killed.
I’m going to have to go with the “Gunslinger” on this one. It was the third quarter, 7-6 in a game they had to have. Sure, the guy was taking a pounding, and it didn’t look good, but the ‘Ol Gunslinger as much as anyone deserved the chance to grind his way through it. What, did you think someone on the bench was going to give you a better chance of winning?! Of course, not! And if that’s the case, then you’re giving up, in a one point game, with the top seed in the conference hanging in the balance.
Even if you’re paranoid the ‘Ol Gunslinger is going to get hurt…that’s a terrible present to set. Does that mean, the guy’s coming off the field on passing downs now? I mean, you don’t want him to take a shot, right?! Do you sit him against teams with good pass rushes?! If you run into Dallas, are you going to bench him because you don’t want DeMarcus Ware to hurt him? If the game’s over and you know you’re not coming back, that’s one thing. But that’s a one point game, and I can see where he was bent. And I can see where he overruled his head coach.
Like, “anything else, ‘Chillie’?” “No, Brett.” “Good. Get out of face. I’m trying to do my job and win a ring so I can jam Ted Thompson and shut a few people up.”
