Jacobellis Does Not ‘Make Up For It Now’
“All’s well, that ends well”, right? Ehhh!!! Not in the case of snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis it doesn’t. ‘L-Jake’, no doubt spent the last four years reliving and rehashing her melt-down in the ‘06 games where her pre-mature style job cost her the Gold Medal. Look, I don’t have a huge problem with her doing that, provided you hit it and finish. But she didn’t! If you can’t nail that style job, stay down on that last jump and get off the mountain. And the only way to get people to stop talking about that catastrophic tank job was to show up in Vancouver and do what you couldn’t do in Torino. And it looked like she was well on her way! But didn’t I say right here, in this spot yesterday, one of the reasons I love Snowboard Cross is that someone always eats it?! Well, Jacobellis was the one who ate it. Right into the gate! D.Q.’ed! Thanks for coming! 4 years of training, really 8 when you consider the 4 she wasted prior to Torino, right... More » |
Figure Skating Has Its Own “Ivan Drago”
I’m not a huge figure skating guy. Unless of course, the event involves Elvis Stojko going upside Eric Lindros’ head…allegedly…then I’m down. Or one potential Gold medalist is challenging his chief competitor’s manhood and questioning his courage. Which is exactly what Russian Evgeni Plushenko is doing to American Evan Lysacek! Plushenko, leads Lysacek in the short program and is clearly trying to infect his dome by calling him out for his refusal to attempt a quad jump, a move that Lysacek has nailed before, but no longer does after suffering a fracture. Plushenko says triple jumps are so 1990’s and to not even try one is to set the sport back a couple of decades. This is exactly what this sport needs! A Russian figure skater who’s rocking the business in the front and party in the back, calling his American counterpart a punk! This cat is the “Ivan Drago” of figure skating. Except instead of ‘roids, a flat-top and Brigitte... More » |
“Sadie The Scottish Terrier” Cashes In
How do you spell champion? S-A-D-I-E. Four words, “Sadie the freaking Scottie”. The greatest dog in the world just got over and assured her place in four legged history by going “Best in Show” at the Westminster Dog Show. She did what the very best do in all sports…play big on the biggest stage of all and finish. And make no mistake…she had to have to it! Despite winning 111 times worldwide, she was still rocking the best ever not to win at the Westminster title. There was definitely a “yeah…but” attached to her little tail. The questioned haunted her and her handlers. “Hadn’t won the big one”, or “couldn’t win the big one”. The scrappy little Scottie was rapped as the “Tony Romo” of the dog world. And rightfully so! That collar always got a little tighter on the big stage. And it’s pretty tough to compete with both paws wrapped around your throat. She got spooked in ‘08. And then hit rock bottom when she disgraced herself... More » |
Curling Is A Glorified Bar Game
Curling was on the box last night. Look, I know Curling is an easy target. And it’s easy to rap, so I went in with an open mind. Maybe there is something to the sport’s nuances, and the teamwork, precision and communication necessary to dominate. Well, if there is, I’m not seeing it. What I am seeing…is a bar game. A bar game featuring a few dudes, with brooms furiously sweeping their shoulders off and another dude sliding a cheese-wheel across the ice and screaming bloody murder for 30 seconds! And Curling isn’t sort of like a bar game. It is a bar game! The only thing missing is the bucket of beers off to the side. Because like any bar game, I’m sure “Curlers” play better with a few in them. Where’s the chalkboard next to the pitch to keep score with tally marks? And quarters lined up on the ice so teams can call “next”? And the jukebox with Brian Adams and Nickelback blaring? How do you ever get into Curling?! I mean, are these... More » |
